    Ecumenical Patriarch: Our Church condemns brutal violation of sovereign state’s independence

    With every solemnity and in accordance with the centuries-old tradition, the Sunday of Orthodoxy was celebrated on Sunday in the Holy Cathedra of the Protothrone Church of Constantinople.

    The Divine Liturgy was presided over by His Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, supported by Ven. Hierarchs Athenagoras of Vizyis, Makarios of Anea, Theodoritos of Laodicea, Eugene of Crete, Amvrosios of Korea, Arsenios of Austria, Apostolos of New Jersey, Chrysostomos of Symi, Nathanael of Chicago, Prodromos of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, Iakovos of Ireland, and Theodoros of Seleucia. During the ceremony, the consecration to Deacon of the Ukrainian origin subdeacon Ellog. Mr. Vassiliou Pokhylets.

    The feast was celebrated by Ven. Metropolitan Nathanael of Kos and Nisyros.

    At the end of the Divine Liturgy, His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch, together with the cooperating High Priests, celebrated the established Trisagion for the repose of the souls of all “those who have struggled and finished in our Orthodox faith”.

    Bartholomew noted that Ukraine had been suffering since February 2022 the dark and unjust aggression and invasion by Russia, with its devastating consequences.

    He stressed that the Church had repeatedly condemned “this brutal violation of the independence of a sovereign state and the inconceivable violence, and prays and fights for the victory of a just peace in the region”.
