    Ministry of Culture: 623 objects of cultural heritage damaged in Ukraine amid Russian invasion

    From February 24, 2022 to May 15, 2023, a total of 623 immovable objects of cultural heritage were damaged or destroyed across Ukraine.

    According to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, among them 80 objects are of national importance and 484 – of local importance. In addition, there are 59 recently discovered objects that have been affected.

    The report says that initial restoration efforts have been taken at 85 sites, but only 23 have been fully restored.

    The Ministry of Culture noted that damage or complete destruction of cultural heritage objects was recorded in 15 regions of Ukraine:

    Kharkiv region (206 objects)

    Donetsk region (90 objects)

    Kyiv region (63 objects)

    Chernihiv region (62 objects)

    Kherson region (58 objects)

    Zaporizhzhia region (33 objects)

    Dnipropetrovsk region (28 objects)

    Sumy region (23 objects)

    Mykolaiv region (22 objects)

    Luhansk region (19 objects)

    Khmelnytskyi region (6 objects)

    Odesa region (5 objects)

    Vinnytsia region (4 objects)

    Zhytomyr region (2 objects)

    Lviv region (2 objects)

    It is reported that as of mid-May 2023, in the territory of Zakarpattia, Cherkasy, Chernivtsi, Rivne, Volyn, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Ternopil regions, no damage to cultural heritage objects due to hostilities was detected.

    The Ministry of Culture noted that out of 623 damaged monuments of cultural heritage, 576 are located in the territories where hostilities took place or in temporarily occupied territories.
