    Defense ministry says 70% of troops OCU believers

    The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has published a White Paper offering data from military surveys, including that on servicemen’s religious affiliation.

    The poll, dating back to 2020, shows the vast majority of respondents (79%) consider themselves religious people.

    The results also show 76% of respondents consider the work of Army chaplains to be a positive and necessary thing.

    The vast majority of respondents identify as members of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (70%). The share of those affiliated with other denominations was as follows: 10% ROCinU, 7% UGCC, 4% RCC, 2% Protestants, 2% Muslims, and 5% others.

    “Given their experience throughout 2014-2020, the work of military priests (chaplains) allowed to provide professional spiritual and moral care of Ukraine Army’s servicemen in forming and maintaining their moral and psychological condition at a level needed to perform tasks assigned, and also to promote national and patriotic education,” noted the Ministry of Defense.
