Ukrainians not willing to concede territory as compromise to achieve peace – poll

Only 8% of surveyed Ukrainians believe that in order to achieve peace and preserve independence, it is possible to give up certain territories of Ukraine.

This proves that neither artillery shelling, nor missile, rocket, and missile terror have shaken Ukrainians in their confidence — no territorial concessions are acceptable for the sake of peace. Some 85% of surveyed Ukrainians are unwilling to concede a single meter of their land to the Russians in exchange for promises of “peace”. That’s according to a poll run by Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) in December 2022.

“In all regions of Ukraine, the absolute majority of the population is against any territorial concessions. Even among residents of the East, which is currently seeing intense fighting, 80% are against concessions (only 9% are ready for them), and among residents of the South, 82% spoke against concessions (only 10% are ready),” says a statement by KIIS.

Sociologists explain that the obvious purpose of Russian strikes is to terrorize the population and create a situation of internal tension to exert pressure on the country’s military and political leadership. However, the dynamic analysis of public attitudes proves that none of these attacks in any way affected the population in this regard.

A total of 2,005 respondents living in all regions of Ukraine (except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea) were surveyed.

In December 2022, KIIS also conducted a survey on how Ukrainians feel about the government’s policy regarding the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (in unity with the Moscow Patriarchate). Some 54% supported the idea of banning the UOC MP as such. In the regional dimension, the majority in favor of the ban are residents of central Ukraine.

The majority of Ukrainians also support sanctions against the UOC (MP) clergy.
