    Metropolitan Epifaniy, Vice President of European Commission discuss protection of religious freedom

    On October 29, the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine met at his residence with Margaritis Schinas, Vice President of the European Commission for the Promotion of the European Way of Life.

    During the meeting, the two discussed the religious situation and the protection of religious freedom, European integration processes in Ukraine, as well as the experience and prospects of interaction of religious organizations with European institutions, the OCU press service reports.

    In addition, Metropolitan Epifaniy told the distinguished guest about the development and formation of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, interaction with other local Churches, including the Hellenic Orthodox Church and the monasteries of Mount Athos, where Ukrainian pilgrims always have a warm welcome.

    In turn, Margaritis Schinas invited the head of the OCU to further cooperation, noting that religious communities are an integral part of the European space.

    The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Head of the Department of External Church Relations, Archbishop Yevstratiy of Chernihiv and Nizhyn.

    On the same day, Margaritis Schinas met with representatives of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations.

    Religious leaders of Ukraine expressed support for the cause of the country’s accession to the European Community, noting the importance of preserving the spiritual roots of Europe. The parties also touched upon specific issues of assistance to those suffering from lawlessness, in particular in the occupied territories of Ukraine.

    A common will was expressed to continue cooperation between the Council, as an institution of Ukrainian civil society, and the institutions of the European Union.
