As a result of Russian forces’ efforts to seize the city of Chernihiv, about 700 local residents were killed.
This was announced at a press conference in Ukrinform by Chernihiv Mayor Vladyslav Atroshenko.
“About 700 people were killed in Chernihiv during the period of war, both military and civilian,” Atroshenko said.
He noted that 70 bodies are yet to be identified. The names of all other persons killed in the Russian siege have been confirmed.
The mayor also noted that de jure, about 40 people are considered missing. But they are likely to be considered killed, as many of them were last seen by the buildings or vehicles destroyed in enemy strikes.
Artoshenko estimates that between 80,000 and 95,000 inhabitants remain in the city as of today. Before the start of hostilities on February 24, there were between 285,000 and 290,000 people living in Chernihiv.
On February 24, Russian President Putin declared war on Ukraine and launched a large-scale invasion. Russian troops have been shelling and destroying infrastructure, massively hitting residential areas of Ukrainian cities and towns, using artillery, rockets, and ballistic missiles.
