The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine once again calls to deprive Russia of its membership in UNESCO after the shelling of the main square in Chernihiv.
“As a result of being hit by an enemy missile, the architectural monument of local importance, the Taras Shevchenko Chernihiv Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater, was destroyed. The architectural monument of national significance, the Pyatnitska Church, which is under the protection of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve Ancient Chernihiv, was also damaged, according to the official statement by the Ministry of Culture.
The ministry says the Historical Center of Chernihiv, a city with over a thousand-year history, is a candidate for inclusion in the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ukraine submitted the Savior-Transfiguration Cathedral of the 11th century and the Church of Saints Borys and Hlib of the 12th century to the Preliminary nomination list.
“This year, the Ministry of Culture, together with the regional and city administrations, started work on adding the cultural landscape of the city of Chernihiv to the List of cultural heritage objects under threat,” the agency reports.
The Ministry of Culture emphasizes that “the threat from Russian barbarians is only growing. Russia as a terrorist state systematically destroys Ukraine’s cultural heritage, causing irreparable losses not only to Ukrainian, but also to world culture.”
