Archbishop of Cologne visits Kyiv: meeting with UGCC Head, words of support for Ukraine

On August 16, as part of his visit to Ukraine, Archbishop of Cologne Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki visited the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv. The final stage of the visit to Ukraine was the Cardinal’s meeting with the Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

This is reported by the UGCC Information Department.

The purpose of the six-day visit to Ukraine was to show solidarity with the Church and Ukrainian people who are suffering from Russian aggression.

Director of the Global Church department, Nadim Ammann, and the chief of the communication department at the Archdiocese of Cologne, Wolfram Eberghardt, joined Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki on the visit.

“It is important that you here in Ukraine feel and understand that you are not alone, that we share in the suffering of your people, in the suffering of the Church, and that we are together with you on this path,” said the Cardinal.

During the meeting, His Beatitude Sviatoslav sincerely thanked the Cardinal, as well as, in his person, the entire German people for their constant support and solidarity with Ukraine.

Cardinal Woelki, after visiting the crypt of the Patriarchal Cathedral, where Blessed Liubomyr Huzar rests in glorious memory, once again emphasized the importance of Christian unity in difficult times.

“I saw various projects, in particular those implemented by the Church, which perfectly helps people in need and stands by those who need help. For me, this is a strengthening of my own faith,” said the archbishop of Cologne.
