Vatican ready to mediate toward POW exchange

The Vatican has expressed readiness to act as a mediator in the exchange of prisoners of war between Ukraine and Russia. The Holy See is in constant contact with the Ukrainian and Russian authorities to this end.

This was stated by the Secretary of the Holy See Cardinal Pietro Parolin during the Peace Summit in Switzerland.

According to him, the Vatican is ready to help as a mediator in cases that are acceptable to all parties and benefit the victims. In particular, they are ready to facilitate the return of children deported to Russia and the release of prisoners, especially seriously wounded soldiers and civilians.

Parolin also noted that there is information about violations of the Geneva Conventions on the treatment of prisoners of war.

As reported by Interfax-Ukraine, the secretary of the Holy See admitted difficulties in setting up, together with the International Committee of the Red Cross, a commission that could assess the situation of prisoners of war in need of urgent medical care.
