Majority of Ukrainians support sanctions against UOC (MP) clergy – survey

In Ukraine, 74% of the population supports the President’s decision to impose sanctions on the top clergy of the UOC (in unity with the Moscow Patriarchate).

This is evidenced by a survey run by the Ilko Kucheriv Foundation Democratic Initiatives together with the Razumkov Center, as reported at an Ukrinform press conference.

“The absolute majority of citizens support the President’s decision to impose sanctions on the higher clergy of the UOC (MP). We see that this is the majority among all denominations, except for the believers of the UOC (MP) themselves, but even there a third of the respondents believe that the President did the right thing when imposing sanctions on the higher clergy. In the country as a whole, 54% fully support the President’s decision on sanctions, and 24% rather support it,” said Petro Burkovskiy, executive chief at the Democratic Initiatives Foundation.

According to the poll, the least support for the introduction of sanctions against the higher clergy of the UOC (MP) is among the residents of the South, where only 34% back the move.

Parishioners of the OCU show the greatest support for sanctions with 88% of respondents.
