    Russian air strike hits Svyatohirsk Lavra sheltering refugees

    As a result of an air strike by the Russian military, the Holy Dormition Svyatohirsk Lavra (run by the ROCinU) was damaged in the city of Svyatohirsk, Donetsk region.

    The blast damaged the Lavra, which housed the monks and refugees. Almost all the windows were shattered, while several church buildings were damaged to varying degrees.

    According to the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security at the Ministry of Culture, on March 12, at 22:00, a Russian air strike hit the Lavra. The bomb exploded 50 meters from the bridge that connects the right and left banks of the Siversky Donets River, near the entrance to the monastery.

    “Due to the terrible force of the explosion, window frames were blown out in the Lavra temples. In the Lavra hotels, an explosive wave smashed all windows and doors. A few wounded were taken to a hospital in Svyatohirsk, while the rest received treatment at the monastery. Fortunately, no one was killed in the attack,” the statement reads

    There are 520 refugees currently sheltering in the Svyatohirsk Lavra, 200 of them children. In total, the city is now home to some 10,000 people, including refugees.

    According to the monastery administration, there were no military servicemen stationed on the premises or in town.
