Romania: election results canceled over Russian meddling, Patriarchate calls for calm

The Romanian Constitutional Court announced on Friday, December 6, 2024, the cancellation of the first round of the presidential election, stating that the entire electoral process must be restarted amid suspicions of Russian interference.

According to the statement, the court “annuls the entire process of electing the President of Romania” in order to “ensure the validity and legitimacy” of the elections, and demands that “the entire electoral process” be repeated.

In this turbulent atmosphere, the Romanian Patriarchate issued a statement on Saturday, December 7, urging the faithful to remain calm and composed in light of the upcoming presidential elections.

In particular, the Patriarchate reported that forums associated with certain political parties plan to visit parishes to mobilize the faithful to protest against the Romanian Constitutional Court and other state institutions.

In this context, the Patriarchate calls on parishes and monasteries throughout its jurisdiction to refrain from participating in “actions that are contrary to both the law and public peace.”

It also emphasizes that such actions will affect both clergy and believers. The Patriarchate emphasizes that the Church advocates prayer and peace to promote the prosperity of society.
