The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
This was reported by Verkhovna Rada lawmaker Oleksiy Honcharenko, President of the PACE Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons.
According to the lawmaker, the corresponding resolution was supported by 80 votes. That is, the document was adopted unanimously.
“PACE also draws attention to the fact that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine now is a continuation of the Russian policy of extermination of Ukrainians. The resolution calls on all governments to do everything possible to help the people of Ukraine repel the ongoing genocidal attack on their nation and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Honcharenko added.
During the Holodomor of 1932-1933, which became one of the worst tragedies of the Ukrainian people, more than 4 million Ukrainians died from Russia-orchestrated starvation. At that time, it was 13% of the population of Ukraine.
In general, the Holodomor was recognized as genocide by at least 30 countries, including the UK, Luxembourg, Slovenia, France, Croatia, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, and others. The European Parliament also adopted a corresponding decision.
