The Security Service documented the anti-Ukrainian activities of the two clerics from the UOC (MP), who lead churches in Zhytomyr and Vinnytsia regions.
According to the case file, they publicly praised Putin, called for the seizure of the entire territory of Ukraine by Russia, and spread anti-Semitic statements, the SBU website reports.
As the investigation established, both defendants “circulated” hostile propaganda in communication with parishioners, as well as through their accounts on social media and chats.
The archpriest of one of the churches in Zhytomyr region, who spoke out in support of the Kremlin’s policy, was charged. It was also documented that in his posts the cleric humiliated the Jewish people.
Another defendant is a hieromonk of one of the churches in Vinnytsia region, who agitated for the seizure of Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine by Russia, repeatedly commenting to this end under pro-Kremlin posts in messengers.
An examination initiated by the Security Service confirmed the criminal nature of the suspects’ actions aimed at destabilizing Ukraine in Russia’s favor.
During the searches, cell phones and computer equipment with evidence of illegal activity were seized from the clerics.
Charges have been pressed against the clerics under three articles of the Criminal Code.
The perpetrators face up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.
