Hungary has blocked putting Russian Patriarch Kirill and a number of other political figures of the aggressor state in the EU sanctions list.
This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, reports HVG.hu.
According to Szijjarto, among the proposed individuals to be sanctioned, in addition to Patriarch Kirill, were the permanent representative of Russia to the UN, the Russian Olympic Committee, and two football teams. However, Hungary successfully blocked all proposals, labeling them “crazy ideas”. Szijjarto noted that what remained in the 15th package of sanctions “actually did not harm national interests”.
The minister also boasted that Budapest did not support the sending of coordination units and consultants to Ukraine as part of the EU training mission.
In 2022, there was already a similar case where Hungary blocked sanctions against the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The 15th package of EU sanctions on Russia:
It was approved on December 16. Fifty-four individuals and 30 entities involved in actions that threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine were subject to restrictions.
As a reminder, earlier the Russian Orthodox Church continued to support the idea of the “Russian world” and justify Russian aggression against Ukraine. Patriarch Kirill also openly blessed the Russian military to deploy in the war.
