Belarus sees clerics’ exodus from social media over censorship, oppression

The online platform katolik.life reports the decrease in the social media presence of Belarusian priests.

Such a trend of decreasing media activity is observed both among Orthodox and Protestant clergymen, Christian Vision notes.

The reason for this is security agencies monitoring of what priests post, engaging in preventive conversations, launching administrative cases for subscriptions to certain outlets that the authorities see as a threat.

This leads to the fact that pastors have fewer resources for missionary and pastoral outreach.

The Belarusian authorities exert severe pressure on the clergy from various denominations. Clergymen are forced to limit their presence in public space, in particular across social media. This is part of the general policy of suppressing freedom of speech and civil society in Belarus.
