In Ukraine, a number of cities and villages in various regions of Ukraine will be renamed in the near future. Among other settlements, the towns of Brovary, Pavlohrad and Chervonohrad will receive new names.
This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to MP Roman Lozynskyi.
According to him, five cities and 104 villages/towns shall be renamed as part of the decolonization process.
The following changes are scheduled:
Chervonohrad – Sheptytskyi;
Yuzhnyi – Port Anental;
Pavlohrad – Matviyiv;
Synelnikove – Ridnopillia;
Brovary – Brovari.
It should be noted that this decision is not final as members of parliament are yet to approve the move.
In April 2023, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed into law the bill on on geographical names aiming to “decolonize” toponymics and streamlining the use of geographical names in populated areas.
This law entered into force on July 27, 2023 to counter Russian imperial propaganda.
The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance proposes that the names of 183 settlements across Ukraine be changed subject to Law “On condemnation and prohibition of propaganda of Russian imperial policy in Ukraine and decolonization of toponymics”.
