The Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, called on the European Union to support Ukraine in resisting Russian aggression by granting the status of a candidate for EU membership and strengthening sanctions against Russia.
This was reported by the press service of the UGCC after His Beatitude Sviatoslav met with MEPs in Brussels.
The meeting took place on the day when the European Commission recommended launching negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
“Ukraine is waiting for an invitation to join the EU. The European Union should grant Ukraine candidate status and increase pressure on Russia through tough economic sanctions,” His Beatitude Sviatoslav emphasized.
He also called on the EU to help Ukraine survive this winter and avoid a humanitarian catastrophe. “Russia is deliberately destroying Ukraine’s infrastructure in order to provoke a humanitarian crisis. The EU should urgently provide financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine,” he stressed.
The archbishop of the UGCC emphasized that Ukrainians are part of the European community and seek EU membership. He called on MEPs to support Ukraine in these aspirations and not to leave it alone with Russian aggression.
