That’s according to the president’s video address to the nation.
“Today I conferred the title of Hero of Ukraine upon Oleksandr Matsievskyi, a soldier. A man whom all Ukrainians will know. A man who will be remembered forever. For his bravery, for his confidence in Ukraine and for his ‘Glory to Ukraine!'” Zelensky said.
It should be noted that on March 6, Ukrainians were shaken by a disturbing video posted by Russian invaders, showing an unarmed Ukrainian serviceman being shot after uttering a motto “Glory to Ukraine.”
The soldier was identified as a sniper with the 163rd Battalion 119th Separate Brigade, Chernihiv region, Oleksandr Matsievskyi.
Matsievskyi was called up for military service in March 2022. Since late December, he had been considered missing in action near Chervona Hora, Donetsk region. Matsievskyi was killed on December 30. His body was extracted in February 2023.
Earlier, the head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, promised to avenge the brutal murder of Ukraine’s defender. Ombudsman Dmytro Lubynets noted that he had sent the video of the execution to his foreign counterparts.
