Unity Day is marked in Ukraine on February 16. This is a young holiday, established only last year by President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decree.
In the winter of 2022, Russia withdrew military equipment to the borders of Ukraine. The international media announced that a full-scale invasion could be unleashed soon. February 16 was called one of the possible dates.
In response, Zelensky called on Ukrainians not to panic and named the date of a possible invasion the Day of Ukrainian Unity.
“They are scaring us with a big war and once again setting a date for a military invasion. This is not the first time. But our state today is stronger than ever… We are told that February 16 will be the day of the attack. We will make it a day of unity. The corresponding decree has already been signed. On this day, we will hoist national flags, wear blue and yellow ribbons, and show the whole world our unity,” Zelensky said in his address to the nation.
Events dedicated to the Day of Unity took place in many cities of Ukraine. For example, a 200-meter long flag was unfurled at NSC Olimpiyskiy arena in Kyiv. The giant flag of Ukraine was also unfurled in Sievierodonetsk.
On February 24, 2022, Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
