    Parliament dismisses SBU chief Bakanov

    The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has dismissed Ivan Bakanov from his post as Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

    A total of 265 Members of Parliament voted in favor of Bakanov’s dismissal, Ukrinform reports.

    “He was not present in the [session] hall. Reading was rather formal,” Member of Parliament Yaroslav Zhelezniak wrote on Telegram.

    In particular, Bakanov’s dismissal was endorsed by 203 representatives of the Servant of the People faction, 11 representatives of the Fatherland faction, two representatives of the Platform for Life and Peace parliamentary group, 12 representatives of the For the Future party, 17 representatives of the Dovira [Trust] party, 11 representatives of the Restoration of Ukraine parliamentary group and nine independent members.

    According to Zhelezniak, the appointment of a new chief of the SBU has not been considered today.

    A reminder that, on July 17, 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suspended Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Bakanov from his duties.
