Metropolitan Epifaniy: More than 50% of Orthodox in Ukraine identify as part of OCU

The head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epifaniy, spoke about the approximate distribution of believers between the OCU and the ROC in Ukraine.

“According to various opinion polls run throughout the past three years, Ukraine has about 72-73% of Orthodox in general. More than 50% identify with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, considering themselves believers with our Church. There is a part, about 15%, of those who refer to themselves as faithful to the ROC in Ukraine,” Metropolitan Epifaniy said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

He added that it would take time for the absolute majority, 80-90% of Ukrainians, to become loyal to the OCU and it’s only then when “calendar reform could be implemented without the risk of splits.”

It should be recalled that the head of the OCU believes that within 10 years, Ukrainians could shift to celebrating Christmas on December 25.
