The Moscow Patriarchate should be evicted from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra for improper maintenance of the national shrine, suggests religious scholar Professor Oleksandr Sagan.
“Isn’t it time to raise the issue of evicting the Moscow Patriarchate from the Kyiv Lavra for improper care of the national shrine and inefficient use (embezzlement?) of government-allocated funds? After all, they find tens of millions of hryvnias for anti-Ukrainian rallies and printing anti-Ukrainian literature. At the same time, they believe the government, against which they are in fact waging an ideological war, must provide for the repair of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra,” the theologian wrote on Facebook.
He added that the Moscow Patriarchate’s poor management of the historical site has led to the national shrine being on the verge of destruction.
“So now they are blackmailing the authorities and demanding money,” the expert wrote, also suggesting that the government “conduct an audit of illegal criminal construction works at the Lavra and an analysis of the expenditures over the years on issues that have become critical today,” Sagan concluded.
The Spiritual Front of Ukraine reported that, despite having set up dozens of trade kiosks at the Lavra site, Metropolitan Pavlo has been asking the government to fund repair works in the caves.
