On October 2, 2024, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated the Jewish community on Rosh Hashanah – the New Year 5785. In his address, he emphasized the importance of this holiday as a time for reflection and rethinking of a life path.
This is stated on the President’s website.
Zelensky noted that Rosh Hashanah traditionally symbolizes a moment to reflect on the future and fill life with bright moments. However, this is not the first year that the holiday for Ukraine has been overshadowed by war, suffering, and loss.
The president expressed hope for a just peace and called on everyone to make efforts to bring it closer. He also thanked the Jewish community for its active participation in defending Ukraine’s independence and offering public support.
“Let families be safe and in harmony, families – close, and all of our Ukraine – see the restoration of peace in the new year,” Zelensky wished the Jewish community.
Despite the war, 33,000 Hasidic Jews visited Uman for pilgrimage. Israeli law enforcers also arrived in Uman to provide assistance to visitors during the Rosh Hashanah holiday.
