On April 26, on the Day of Remembrance of the Greatest Ecological and Humanitarian Catastrophe of Ukraine and the World, a vigil was held for the victims of the Chornobyl tragedy in the OCU’s St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv’s Tatarka district.
The requiem was led by the rector of the temple, archpriest Taras Melnyk, co-served by the clergy. The leadership and staff of the Shevchenkivskyi District State Administration, first responders, victims of the Chornobyl NPP disaster, and members of public took part in the prayer.
The service honored the heroism of firefighters, military personnel, researchers, and medics who, in April 1986, were dealing with the aftermath of the explosion at Chornobyl NPP’s power unit 4, restraining the “invisible enemy”, radiation.
After the vigil, those present laid flowers at the memorial cross at the Chernobyl Victims Memorial Complex, thus honoring all those who suffered or died as a result of the worst man-made disaster in the history of mankind.
For 38 years, the world has been remembering the feat of first responders and victims of the radiation disaster, honoring their memory on April 26.
