    Acclaimed religious scholar, researcher, and former political prisoner Ihor Kozlovsky dies

    On the night of September 6, the scientist, historian, and religious scholar Ihor Kozlovskyi passed away. From January 2016 to December 2017, he was held captive by Russian proxy forces in the so-called “DPR”.

    This was reported by his colleague, religious scholar Lyudmila Filipovych.

    “Ihor Kozlovsky passed away tonight due to a heart attack,” she wrote.

    Ihor Kozlovsky comes from Donetsk region. He is the author of 50 scientific works and more than 200 articles. Among the areas of his work was the religious situation of the occupied territories of Donbas. He was a member of PEN Ukraine.

    On January 27, 2016, he was captured by Russian proxy forces with the “Donetsk People’s Republic” for his pro-Ukrainian position and was held captive for almost two years (700 days) until December 27, 2017. He was released from captivity in a prisoner exchange effort.

    Ihor Kozlovsky said the militants put a bag on his head and beat him. They also simulated an execution and demanded that the man “plead guilty”.
