While ROCinU unveils monument of Russian princes, OCU consecrates monument of fighters for Ukraine’s freedom

A monument of the Fighters for the Freedom of Ukraine was unveiled in Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk region, in the OCU church premises.

Instead, a monument of Russian princes was unveiled outside an ROCinU chapel, showing how different the two Churches are in essence.

Merkuriy (Sviatoslav Skorokhod), the OCU deacon, reflected on the issue on Facebook.

“The two Churches and their two different views on their Heroes. What vectors distinguish the Orthodox Church of Ukraine from the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine in Nikopol? A monument of the Fighters for the Freedom of Ukraine is being unveiled in one church, while a monument praising Russian princes is being unveiled in the other,” the OCU cleric wrote.

The opening ceremony for the monument in honor of the Fighters for the Freedom of Ukraine” on the territory of the church of St. Righteous Peter Kalnyshevsky took place on November 3. OCU Archbishop Simeon of Dnipro and the local clergy council consecrated the monument.

The OCU archbishop said the memorial would serve as real remembrance as regards all those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom, “for the independence of our homeland Ukraine since ancient times and up to today.”
