Ukraine becomes member of UNESCO World Heritage Committee

On November 22, Ukraine was for the first time elected to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee during the 24th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy.

The ICRC recalled that in July 2022, Ukraine pitched its candidacy for the elections to the World Heritage Committee for 2023-2027.

“This is a historic event for Ukraine and an important step in the development and protection of the cultural and natural heritage of Ukraine. We thank the countries participating in the Convention for the expressed solidarity decision in support of Ukraine. It is now more important than ever to unite for the protection of our cultural heritage,” said Acting Minister of Culture and Information Policy Rostyslav Karandeev.

The election of Ukraine to the World Heritage Committee opens new opportunities for active participation in the implementation of the Convention, including for making decisions on the utilization of the World Heritage Fund and the inclusion of objects on the List of World Heritage and the List of World Heritage in Danger.

The Convention on the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, ratified by Ukraine in 1988, contributes to the effective protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage on the territory of the Ukrainian state.

Acting with its own efforts and making maximum use of available resources, Ukraine implements international assistance and cooperation in financial, artistic, scientific, and technical relations toward the proactive popularization of the country’s heritage.

It will be recalled that the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy said Ukraine had been liberated from the “Russian-imperial evil”.
