On the morning of September 18, in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican, Pope Francis accepted the credentials from the new extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Russian Federation, accredited to the Holy See, Ivan Soltanovsky.

Ivan Soltanovsky was born in 1955 and is married with a daughter. Graduated from the Moscow State University of International Relations of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1977, he joined the diplomatic service and held positions in the Consulates General in Karachi (Pakistan) and Calcutta (India), in the Embassy in India, and in the Permanent Mission of Russia to the OSCE. He was also Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO in Brussels and Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the Council of Europe (from 2015 to 2022).
From 2013 to 2023, the post of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Holy See was held by Aleksandr Avdeev.
