ROC Synod thanks Hungary PM for saving Cyril from sanctions

The Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, recently held in Moscow, thanked Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for blocking a provision of the latest EU sanctions package specifically targeting ROC leader Patriarch Cyril (Gundyaev).

This is stated in the Journal of the 57th ROC Synod.

“To express gratitude to Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán for his firm position on the inadmissibility of designating His Holiness Patriarch Cyril of Moscow and All Russia in the list of EU sanctions,” the document reads.

In May this year, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he did not support the idea to impose EU sanctions on ROC leader Patriarch Cyril.
