The vast majority of Ukrainian citizens are in favor of Ukrainian being the only state language in the country.
That’s according to a poll by the Rating Sociological Group.
The number of Russian speakers decreased from 26% (late 2021) to 18%, the survey reveals.
The vast majority of respondents (83%) are in favor of Ukrainian being the only state language. Before the war, a quarter of Ukrainians were in favor of granting the Russian language status of state language, while today their share dropped to a mere 7%.
Some 76% of Ukrainians consider Ukrainian their native language. This share has increased by almost 20% over the last 10 years (in 2012, 57% of people considered Ukrainian their native tongue). Another 20% of Ukrainian citizens consider Russian their native language (in 2012 there were 42% of such respondents).
Also, 60% of bilinguals, speaking both Ukrainian and Russian, said they were ready to switch to Ukrainian in the near future.
Another 34% of Russian speakers declared their readiness to switch to Ukrainian completely.
