Justin Welby becomes first Church of England leader to visit an active European warzone since 1916.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to The Times.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Archbishop of Canterbury praised the \u201cextraordinary courage\u201d of the Ukrainian people as he arrived in the country\u2019s capital for a landmark visit.<\/p>\n

Justin Welby arrived by sleeper train in Kyiv to show solidarity in the face of what he called \u201cRussia\u2019s illegal, unjust and brutal invasion\u201d, becoming the first leader of the Church of England since the First World War to travel to an active European war zone.<\/p>\n

Welby said he wanted to \u201cbe present with people who, because of conflict and war, feel incredibly isolated\u201d and said that he feared a humanitarian catastrophe. He added: \u201cThis visit is about showing solidarity with them as they face a profoundly difficult winter.\u201d<\/p>\n
