Chernihiv on brink of humanitarian catastrophe, more than 200 civilians already killed

In Chernihiv, the regional center northeast of Kyiv, about 200 civilians have already been killed in Russian shelling and bombing since Russia launched a full-out war on Ukraine.

The local mayor, Vladyslav Atroshenko, admits that the bodies can’t be buried properly, in line with Christian rites, as the major cemetery on the city outskirts is now in the zone of active hostilities, NV reports.

“Our central city cemetery, Yatsevo, is located on the outskirts of the city, where firefights are taking place. So we can’t bury people there these days. Therefore, we’re using a closed down cemetery where we take those tiny land plots available. That’s why we can’t bury them in line with Christian traditions… We will eventually rebury them,” the mayor of Chernihiv said.

The situation with food supplies is extremely difficult as grocery shops ensure only 10% of the regular delivery volumes, so the city relies exclusively on humanitarian aid. Also, due to power blackouts, stocking up on frozen products remains impossible.

It should be recalled that in one of the city districts on March 16, ten people were killed in a Russian strike as they were waiting in line to buy bread.

Later, the updated report said the number of civilians killed in that particular attack rose to 14.
