“This is our heritage” – OCU spox explains stance against shifting from Cyrillic to Latin

A spokesman for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Archbishop Yevstratiy (Zorya) of Chernihiv, explained why he stands against prospects to have writing in Ukraine transferred to from a Cyrillic script to Latin alphabet.

“That’s because the Cyrillic script is OUR heritage, OUR alphabet. More than a thousand years of Ukrainian culture were created with its use. It is not borrowed, like the Arabic alphabet for the Turks or the Cyrillic alphabet for the Kazakhs, who, when they switched to Latin, simply borrowed once again,” he wrote on Facebook.

Archbishop Yevstratiy noted that all languages have Latin transliteration, so it should be available for Ukrainian as well – phonetically close to the original, understandable to the international audiences, and standardized.

“But just as Greeks, Koreans, Jews, Armenians or Georgians are proud of their alphabets and do not change them to Latin, so we must keep the Cyrillic alphabet,” the OCU hierarch concluded.

As reported earlier, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Oleksiy Danilov, said he supported the idea of Ukraine’s transition to the Latin alphabet.
